The above video shows a short clip about how women's makeup has changed through the ages.
One of the most commonly used things in makeup and one of the oldest is kohl eyeliner. This was used in ancient Egypt and was also used in the middle east.
Some forms of makeup were influenced by social class and legendary stories. This particularly was the case in China, where people stained their fingernails to show their social class. They also drew flowers on their heads after a princess woke up from a nap and had a flower imprinted on her forehead.
Pale skin was also popular during the Elizabethan era and the Pre French Revolution. It was thought this respresented wealth, as rich people could afford to stay inside all day and not have to go out to work.
By the 1910s, there was a turnaround in makeup as woman having rouge in their cheeks and lips, which was popular during the pre French revolution, became scandalous and was seen as a mark of "sex and sin" by men.
It was during the 1920s that tanned skin became more popular. By the 1930s cosmetics were being introduced to make skin look tanned.
During the 1960s people started to become a lot more experimental with makeup. The use of bold colours and false eyelashes became very popular. This was also when hippie looks became popular too.
Modern day makeup is very different. Men have started to wear concealer to cover any blemishes they have. Beauty techniques such as contouring have also became a lot more popular.
